Bermuda CableVision has donated $45,000 to three organisations working to help the people of Haiti.

The amount is the largest-ever handout from the company. The Bermuda Red Cross and the Salvation Army each received $20,000 and the Feed My Lambs Ministry was given $5,000.

CableVision general manager Terry Roberson said: "It is a true credit to Bermuda, situated just over 1,000 miles from Haiti, that this community has rallied so feverishly to support the international relief mission in the two weeks since the earthquake.

"Our employees wanted to support this heartfelt response and we decided to make our largest-ever charity donation in the company's history to three local organisations who are helping Haiti."

Meanwhile, Red Cross director Ann Spencer-Arscott gave an update yesterday on the Red Cross fund-raising overall.

"I am thrilled to report that upon checking our figures today we have received just over $381,000 in donations from the people of Bermuda," she said. "This money is being wired to the British Red Cross tomorrow, Wednesday 27th. These funds will be distributed by the British Red Cross in accordance with their activities on the ground in Haiti."

Mrs. Spencer-Arscott added: "We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the community and we know there is still more coming in."

In other news, the New Places Generation Gombeys has organised a street dance to raise funds for Haiti on Saturday, January 30. They will start performing at Admiralty House Park, Pembroke, at 10 a.m. and then head into Hamilton during the evening.

Terri McCarthy from the group extended an invitation to other troupes to join in, and hopes people will come along to make a donation and lend support.

"All the monies raised will be given to the First Church of God's Missionary Ministries who already have a base set up in Haiti," she explained.
