Aljame fired up by Hogges snub
Aljame Zuill has vowed to take out his frustration at being snubbed by Bermuda Hogges by firing Knights to the Island Soccer League (ISL) title.
The veteran striker was dismayed at not making the Hogges squad with coach Kyle Lightbourne overlooking him in favour of Hamilton Parish's Jamie Smith, Dandy Town's Antwan Russell and PHC's Lloyd Holder.
Zuill has now returned to his former team, Knights, who he helped reach the ISL's first final in 2007.
"I was very disappointed that the Hogges didn't pick me and I can't even really go there," said Zuill, who played for the semi-professional team last season and watched last week's home win over Harrisburg City Islanders from the stands.
"Some the guys they have picked don't even play regularly for their club team. How can you play for the Hogges if you aren't one of the best players for your club. I think there's a lot of politics involved in team selection and I don't want to dwell too much on it."
Zuill was Knights coach Keishon Smith's first round draft pick at the ISL Superdraft on Thursday night at Bootsies Comedy Club and Zuill has tipped the team to go all the way.
"I think a lot of the other clubs wanted me to join them but I played for Knights in the first ISL season and I wanted to go back," Zuill said. "We should have won the tournament in the first year but lost to Kings. We had been pretty much undefeated on the way to the final but then got complacent.
"But this season it will be different and we're going all the way."
Last season's ISL saw attendances increase at the National Sports Centre and Zuill is confident commissioner David Bascome's networking skills will encourage more fans to flock through the turnstiles.
"I'm very confident in David and he has done a great job in getting the ISL name out there," said the Devonshire Colts talisman. "Hopefully supporters will keep coming because the ISL and Hope4Life programme are important for Bermuda."
Zuill will use the ISL to get himself fully fit for Colts who finished bottom of the Premier Division last season but beat St. David's in the play-off to secure their survival.
"I missed a lot of matches for Colts last season due to injury and the ISL will give me an opportunity to get myself fit again for the next domestic season."
Bermuda Under-23s have been boosted by the availability of PHC's Marquel Waldron, Devonshire Colts' Marco Piper Dandy Town goalkeeper Mikkail Crockwell and North Village pair Pierre Smith and Thomas Watson for their match against Richmond Kickers tomorrow night at BFA Field.
Kickers take on Bermuda Hogges tonight at the National Sports Centre at 7 p.m.
