King, Couper absent from Nationals
More than 50 events in a variety of age groups will held when Bermuda Track and Field Association stage their national championships at the National Sports Centre today and tomorrow.
It wasn?t known yesterday, however, how many of the Island?s top senior athletes would be competing with long jumper Arantxa King and middle distance runner Ashley Couper, both based overseas, expected to be among the absentees.
Others who represented Bermuda at this year?s Commonwealth Games, such as 800 metres runner Michael Donawa and high jumpers Latroya Darrell and Zindzi Swan, are expected to compete.
Action starts today at 5 p.m. with the girls? and women?s javelin and continues through to the 4x100 metres relay at 8 p.m.
Competition then resumes tomorrow with the boys? and men?s javelin, continuing through to the final event at 6.30, the 4x400 relay.
Medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers and ribbons to the fourth, fifth and sixth place finishers.
Fresh from their successful ?Post May 24? meet last week, the Flyers Track Club are taking some of their top talent to compete overseas.
Coach Donna Watson will be travelling with 11 young athletes to take part in the Northwest Track and Field Classic in Miami, Florida.
According to Watson, the athletes were selected ?based on their dedication, effort, commitment and their top rate performances?.
The meet, from June 9 to June 11, will feature competitors from some 100 clubs across the USA and the Caribbean.
Representing the Flyers will be: Tonya Robinson (200m and 400m), Darico Clarke (400m and 800m), Tyree Armstrong (800m and 1500m), Ashley Berry (1500m and 3000m), Megan Berry (800m and 1500m), Akilah Bremar (400m and 800m), Michellae Edwards (200m and 400m), Keshuntay Graham (100m and 200m), Kacee Simons (200m and 400m), Thayne Simons (100m and 200m) and Tre Simons (400m and 800m).
