Southampton 144 Eastern Counties champions St. David's had cause to celebrate for the second day in a row as they routed Southampton Rangers on Sunday, thus confirming themselves for next year's Camel Cup competition, while also securing the runners-up spot in the final Premier League standings.

Entering the match with the knowledge that a loss would doom them to the pile of also-rans, the Islanders came out with purpose and, led by the booming bat of Glenn Blakeney, let the home side know early on that they meant business.

Blakeney, after a recent lean spell, returned to his belligerent best, flashing his blade about as he treated Rangers' bowlers with disdain while amassing a score of 119.

The stylish left-hander belted nine sixes and 12 fours, his total coming from 128 balls.

Assisting in the run department was veteran Allen Richardson (21), along with Lionel Cann (14), Sammy Robinson (14) and captain Clay Smith (13).

Olin Jones took three wickets for Rangers, but at high cost, as his seven overs yielded 42 runs.

Taking two apiece were Garry Williams, Janeiro Tucker and Sidney Simmons.

Rangers appeared in with at least a shout when Kwame Tucker and Olin Jones hooked up for a second wicket stand of 49, but a middle order collapse exposed a lack of depth and from 67 for two the home side collapsed to 144 all out.

However, despite the loss Rangers were still able to hold onto a Camel Cup place as Cleveland beat Police, the only team that could overtake them.

Western Stars 149 Willow Cuts 146 Western Stars completed an unbeaten league campaign, but only just as home team Willow Cuts gave the newly-crowned champs all they could handle at Somerset Cricket Club.

In the end, Charles Swan's failure to connect on the last delivery of the match assured Stars of victory, their 22nd overall.

A four off the last ball would have given Cuts a much deserved triumph.

However, the luck of the champions prevailed and instead Swan turned to see young wicketkeeper Jakon Edness whipping off the bails signifying the end to his and his team's hopes.

Swan had earlier got Cuts off to a flyer as he got star batsman Albert Steede to flail at a wide delivery first ball of the game and watched with glee as it found first the bat edge and then the safe clutches of 'keeper Robert Lambe.

Stars continued their downward spiral, losing their first five wickets for a mere 55 runs, before Cleon Scotland and Hasan Durham righted the ship with a 39-run sixth wicket stand.

Scotland battled his way to 55 before being bowled by Kevin Fubler, his innings comprising 102 balls, four fours and a six.

Durham played the ultimate support role, his contribution of six coming from 48 balls.

Steval Mendes was the top bowler for Cuts with three for 46.

Cuts likewise struggled to score as they slumped to 35 for five before Mendes (27) and Trevor Forth (27) pulled them out of the mire with a 40-run sixth wicket stand.

Reggie Tucker followed with a valuable 18 as Cuts inched closer towards an improbable victory, but ultimately their challenge fell short.

Flatts 179 Bailey's Bay 183-7 Ricky Hill was an unlikely bowling hero for Bailey's Bay as he snatched six for 58 to lead them to this three-wicket victory over Flatts at Devonshire Rec.

The veteran batsman enjoyed his haul off 10 overs as he was the only bowler using the maximum overs. Team-mate Clarkie Trott reyurned two for 22 off 6.5 overs.

Flatts still reached a respectable total with Andrew Richardson stroking 40, opener Vernon Eve 25, Dale Benjamin 22 and skipper Rahji Edness 19.

Inspired by an aggressive Corey Hill who blasted 54, Bay reached their winning target off 28.2 overs, Hill finishing with seven fours and two sixes. Skipper Charlie Marshall was not out on 37, Jermaine Warner hit 29 and Cal Dill 21.

Eve was the best bowler for Flatts with three for 29 while Benjamin had two for 28.

PHC 125 Devonshire Rec. 126-6 Omar Amory took six for 43 off eight overs and Dennis Williams had three for 30 off 10 overs as Devonshire Rec. defeated PHC by four wickets at Sea Breeze Oval.

Opener Sheridan Ming was top bat for PHC with 45 while Cal Waldron scored 18, Allan Wilkinson 16 and Antoine Green 15.

Winston Trott Jr. was top scorer for Devonshire with 38 not out while Rudolph Smith finished not out on 31. Oldapo Fredericks followed with 17 and Ricardo Brangman and Darran Davis chipped in with 10 apiece.

Kevin Tucker led PHC bowlers with three for 36 off 10 overs, with three maidens, and Charles Symons had two for 24 off three overs with a maiden.

Social Club 100 Somerset CC 103-6 Big Craig Brangman came up with a trojan allround performance to lead Somerset to this four wicket win at St. John's field.

First he claimed five wickets for 20 off nine overs, including two maidens, to lead his team's attack and then he followed up with a high score of 41 to secure victory.

Opener Kevin Lapsley led Social Club batsmen with 27 while H.Clarke followed with 26.

Also among the runs for the west enders were Cordell Gilbert with 30 and Leon Place with 10.

Derek Bean led the Social Club bowling with two for one off one over.

Cleveland 220-9 Police 138 Police fielded just 10 men and paid the price by losing to Cleveland by 62 runs at Wellington Oval in a game reduced to 34 overs.

Peter Philpott had an outstanding allround game, first slamming 73 to lead Cleveland in a dramatic recovery after they were reeling at 16 for four and then taking three for 27 off eight overs.

Philpott and Johnny Richardson (38) helped to stabilise the innings with Curtis Jackson (28 not out) playing a vital role although forced to retire for a while during the early stages after being hit by the ball.

Freston Hurdle led the Police attack with three wickets for 23 off eight overs while Dennis Archer had three for 33 off eight overs.

Police, who suffered from some sloppy fielding, made a respectable reply but never looked capable of winning.

Archer was top bat with 26 while Hurdle followed with 25 and opener Andrew Rollins 24.

Assisting Philpott in the bowling department was Courtney Trott who had three for 36 off eight overs with two maidens.

Warwick 144 Somerset Bridge 51 Warwick exacted revenge on Somerset Bridge in this battle of the cellar dwellers.

Warwick tallied 144, based on a solid knock of 35 by Jason Williams before dismissing the home side for a paltry 51.

Bridge thus finished the league schedule winless in 14 matches.
