Match-winner Marlon sent packing
Marlon Lindsay's two-goal effort was marred by a needless sending off in the closing seconds -- but his Belco team still advanced in the FA Cup at BAA Field yesterday.
Lindsay and former Hotels team-mate, Michael Holdipp, scored the goals as Belco joined fellow Commercial sides Robin Hood and BAA Wanderers in the third round which will involve the First Division teams.
Belco took a deserved lead in the 39th minute when the ball was knocked back into the middle from a corner and Lindsay drove home from close range.
Three minutes later Craig Dixon came closest for Mariners in the first half when his low shot from inside the box rolled inches past the far post.
Then right on half-time Eldon Rego shot wide with just goalkeeper Gerald Sims to beat.
Lindsay wasted a good chance to double Belco's lead in the first minute of the second half but 'keeper Mark Paiva twice blocked his efforts before conceding a corner. He paid for that miss, too, as Rego equalised in the 55th minute when a long ball into the box by Derrick Bean was laid on for Rego to score with a shot into the far corner.
Belco reclaimed the lead in the 70th minute when Joe Barbosa was blown down for a handball inside the box as he tried to stop Lindsay. Holdipp scored into the roof of the net from the penalty spot.
Paiva was beaten in the 85th minutet but Lindsay's shot from 25 yards smashed against the crossbar. The striker did find the net again two minutes later when he took a pass from substitute Craig Brangman inside the box and steered the ball past Paiva.
Mariners made it close with their second goal in the 89th minute when Carlos Lopes scored. Lindsay's game ended seconds before everybody else's when he was ejected by referee Irven Simmons for wasting time as the teams got ready to restart. He had already received a yellow card.
Ireland Rangers 1 St.George's All Stars 1 (after extra-time) Ireland Rangers came from behind to force extra-time but couldn't produce a winning goal against their Commercial League opponents at Somerset. For All-Stars it was a good result as they were without their goal-hungry captain Charles Wade who was sent off in a match last week and was serving a suspension.
St.George's scored first in the 10th minute after a great flick-on header from Carlos Caisey found James Pace who drilled the ball past the advancing Ricardo Tucker from 15 yards.
Rangers equalised in the 30th minute after Melvin Brangman crossed to Michael Mendes from the right and he fired past keeper David Brangman from eight yards.
St. George's might have scored more if the hard-running Pace had made better use of his chances.
Rangers also were guilty of mediocre finishing, but they played a more enterprising brand of football.
Four yellow cards were shown, three against Rangers.
Wade will be now available for the replay which is expected to be held this week.
