PHC content to be underdogs
Zebras accept that tag going into tomorrow's women's FA Cup final against strong favourites and undefeated challengers Rude Girls at National Stadium, starting at 2 p.m.
Judging by their most recent clash which saw Rude Girls emerge 9-0 winners, tomorrow's game should see them finish the second triumphantly and unbeaten -- capturing their fourth title, having already won the Charity Cup, Konica Cup and league.
But the Zebras new coach Andre Swan has found some reason to be optimistic going into the contest, while admitting his opponents have every right to be heavily favoured.
"I'm quietly confident going into the game, our chances depends on our hard workrate. But I am quietly confident that our overseas players will instill our belief in that we can overcome and win the game,'' said Swan.
Swan was referring to forwards Waynesha Bean and Tschama Wade, both of whom were instrumental in helping the Zebras score a stunning 4-1 victory against Rude Girls in last year's final -- a setback which proved to be their only loss a year ago.
Now the two teams find themselves in a similar position and this time Swan is busy attempting to boost his team's hopes by reminding them of the upset.
But even with the return of the college students, both of whom are on soccer scholarships, he realises that their chances of winning will be tough.
The recent loss against Rude Girls came in the Charity Cup and they were again soundly trounced by 7-0 just a few weeks before that contest.
Yet Swan's team had some satisfaction during the Christmas holidays when the teams battled to a 2-2 draw with the two college students returning to strengthen the Zebras' ranks.
"Our overseas players are quite fit and raring to go, but it's the overall workrate of the others that will decide the outcome of this final,''said the coach, who only took over the team in January when former coach Wendell Furbert left for personal reasons.
In addition to strikers Bean and Wade, Zebras will be counting on scoring punch from their leading scorer this season, Geneanna Simons, who will be in midfield with skipper Che-Ru Tucker playing on the right side of midfield.
The other key players in the team are Dionne Pitt, centre-back, and the young player of the year last season, and goalkeeper Kimmisha Perinchief.
But with seven national squad players in their ranks Rude Girls are a formidable bunch.
Zebras are expected to be competitive, but the odds say that Rude Girls will not be upset a second year in a row.
