Breaking News: Mixed fortunes for Island's athletes

Jacklyn Lambert ploughed a lone furrow for Bermuda on the first day of the Commonwealth Games in India today.

Lambert won her first round match in the tennis competition against Uganda’s Jalia Nanfuka 6-0, 6-1, the Island’s only triumph of the day so far.

In contrast Gavin Manders and David Thomas both lost in the first round. Manders went down 6-1, 6-2 to Greg Jones of Australia, while Thomas lost by the same score to Amresh Jayawickreme of Sri Lanka.

It was a similar story in the squash, where Nick Kyme, Bermuda’s sole representative, lost to Scotland’s Alan Clyne in straight sets.
