Breaking news: Igor loses some strength
Hurricane Igor has lost a little strength this afternoon, and its path is now veering slightly further away from Bermuda than earlier predicted.
However, winds on the Island are picking up as Igor progresses across the Atlantic, with sustained winds at L.F. Wade International Airport at 52 knots (60 miles per hour) at 5.55 p.m. and hurricane force gusts up to 60 knots (74 mph).
Bermuda Weather Service's 6 p.m. update said Igor is now 82 nautical miles south-west of Bermuda, moving at 13 knots (15 mph). It's expected to be at its closest point to Bermuda at 10 p.m., when it will be 47 nautical miles to the west. At 3 p.m., the closest point was expected to be 22 nautical miles away.
Igor's sustained winds are now 70 knots (80 mph), with gusts of 85 knots (98 mph). For most of today, sustained winds were 75 knots (86 mph) and gusts were 90 knots (103 mph).
