Still fun after all these years!
Time flies when you are having fun and no one knows that better than United Dance Production's founder Suzette Harvey.
For it seems like only yesterday that the talented dancer organised a group of friends for a show entitled A Tribute to Nelson Mandela.
Ten years later the group she founded in her mother's backyard has grown from a grassroots movement into a fully-fledged dance company and school with corporate sponsorship.
"Looking back I can't believe ten years have gone by,'' marvelled Ms Harvey.
"Time really flies when you're having fun, and it has been a lot of fun -- and a lot of hard work too.'' To mark this remarkable transformation Ms Harvey and her innovative dance company will stage a tenth anniversary show entitled Flash Back, sponsored by the Bank of Bermuda.
"It's a retrospective show,'' explained Ms Harvey. "We will be doing two hits, the audience favourites, from each year.'' UDP celebrates anniversary The show will also reunite many former or retiring UDP dancers. This will be the last time the group will all share the same stage.
"We are bringing back many alumni,'' Ms Harvey explained. "It will probably be the last time you will see a lot of these dancers perform. Five of the dancers will be going into the Bermuda Dance Company and some will be retiring because of age, family or work commitments.'' Nineteen UDP dancers, ten alumni and 14 junior performers will share centre stage this weekend. "This show pays tribute to the dancers, teachers and supporters,'' she added. "These people helped make UDP who we are, they ensured the success of UDP and motivated so many people both young and old.
"This is a way of thanking them for their contribution and sharing their talent.'' Flash Back will also be the last opportunity for the public to sit back and enjoy some of UDP's most memorable routines.
"Some of the pieces will also be phased out, so this will be the last time the public will see many of them performed.'' UDP's tenth anniversary show will debut tonight at the Ruth Seaton James Centre at 8 p.m. There will be a second show tomorrow night at the same time.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and are available at UDP's office at Alexandrina Hall on Court Street in Hamilton.
