Youth charity Teen Services has proclaimed May to be Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, in recognition of Bermuda’s ongoing problems with the issue.Community Minister Wayne Scott yesterday called for Island-wide support behind the awareness campaign, which Teen Services has now hosted for 15 years.“The economic, social and personal cost to teen parents, their families and society is great,” Mr Scott told the presentation.“Teen Pregnancy impacts every parish, school and household.”The group’s executive director Michelle Wade said Teen Services, which runs the Teen Haven transitional living programme, helped 220 teenage clients through 2011 to 2012.She added: “I’m pleased to report that Teen Services partnered with CedarBridge Academy, the Berkeley Institute and Dellwood Middle School to ensure that students received age appropriate information on the prevention of risky behaviours — which include premature sexual activity, and drug and alcohol abuse.”The group will be present at the May 8 and May 22 Harbour Nights, and has partnered with the Parent Life Show which will air a Teen Pregnancy segment today at 8pm on Channel 82.“Tune in and listen to the testimonies of two of our Continuation School alumni,” Ms Wade said.Guest speaker and parenting blogger Peter Saunders reflected on his teenage years in Jamaica and as a young father.“There are many gifted young people here,” he said. “Some of you could perhaps take a maths test without much preparation. There are others who can run a 10K in good time with little training. Most of us are not so gifted. Besides, there is one role in life that requires preparation from all of us in order to result in some form of success.“Starting a family takes some forethought — if you want to do it right.”
