Bermuda seen through Scottish eyes

A Glasgow School of Art take on the scenes of Bermuda can be seen at new exhibit in the Atrium at Ace Tempest Re as of this evening.

Lisa Anne Rego is presenting a show of 16 paintings from artist Mike Healey and other Scottish painters.

Ms Rego identified 35 painters she considered to be exceptional during a recent trip to Scotland and intends to begin operating as a Scottish fine art consultant for Bermuda homes and offices.

One of these 35, Mr. Healey is a well-known artist who divides his time between his Argyll studio, painting trips and Lincoln University in Lincolnshire, England.

He studied under John Cunningham both at school and later at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1970s.

Mr. Healey won the Haldane Travelling Scholarship and the Leverhulme Travelling scholarship to the United States.

A plein air painter, Mr. Healey lived and worked as an artist and freelance designer in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, painting murals and illustrations for a variety of Brazilian government agencies.

He returned to Glasgow in the 1980s and was appointed a senior lecturer at Glasgow School of Art, a post he held until 1997 when demand for his works led him to resign to concentrate on painting full-time. Ms Rego said Mr. Healey is a figurative artist whose ?style and use of colour can be traced back to the flat perspectives of Anne Redpath and the vivid pinks of Cadell?s Iona shores?.

She said: ?Mike?s vivid, confident brush strokes successfully capture his direct response to nature and the elements.?

Mr. Healey?s works have been exhibited in his native Scotland, London, New York, Philadelphia and Maryland and can be found in many collections worldwide including the Glasgow School of Art, the European Parliament, the Royal Mail, Wobburn Abbey Scottish Collection and now the Bermuda National Gallery.

The works in the Caledonian Collection will be on display until January 5. They will be auctioned off and part of the proceeds will be donated to the Cornerstone Foundation, a local charity which which has raised thousands of dollars for the less fortunate in Bermuda and around the world.

Tonight?s opening will run from 5.30 to 7.30 and the gallery is located at 30 Woodbourne Avenue.
