Course offered to improve teaching of maths
A course targeting Primary school maths teachers is currently being offered at the Reading Clinic.
With many students struggling with maths, attempting to find the best way to teach maths in private and public schools has become a challenge.
Educational consultant Julie Dunstan is facilitating the course with the goal of teaching to a ?diverse group of learners?.
Dr. Dunstan said students have many learning differences and the course will help teachers devise different classroom strategies.
?Individual students learn differently and have different neurodevelopment. The teachers will learn to develop different activities that are effective for different learning abilities,? Dr. Dunstan said.
The class consists of 17 teachers, ten from public schools and seven from private schools, who will also discover how learning differences can impact on performance in maths courses and will learn to teach problem solving, money and time concepts, operations and rational numbers to all types of students.
?The course has received very positive feedback from the schools and it?s very helpful for the teachers because they get to learn from each other.?
Dr. Dunstan also said that it was crucial to raise the confidence level of teachers. ?You have to look at all aspects of learning,? she said.
