Goater on Cardiff wanted list - report

First Division new boys Cardiff City are the latest club to show a keen interest in signing Manchester City striker Shaun Goater, according to yesterday's edition of Wales on Sunday.

While Goater is back on the Island and will begin his week-long Grassroots Soccer Festival today, speculation over where he will begin his next season continues to grow.

Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy has already stated that he would like to sign the prolific City goalscorer while last week another First Division club, Reading, also confirmed that they were interested.

According to yesterday's report, Cardiff, just promoted from Division Two, are keen to find a partner for ?1.7 million club record signing Peter Thorne and manager Lennie Lawrence feels that the 33-year-old Bermudian could fit the bill.

Lawrence is also reportedly looking at unwanted Middlesbrough hit-man Dean Windass.

The former Charlton boss was quoted as saying: "I might be interested in someone who can lead the attack and get goals - it's easier said than done to find someone, though.

"As for who will come to Cardiff, that will depend on the budget figures to be discussed between myself and (owner) Sam Hammam."

While Goater still has a year left on his contract at City, manager Kevin Keegan has told him he's free to leave with Nicolas Anelka and Robbie Fowler again expected to be his first choices up front next season.
