Attack pair deny being at crime scene
The two men accused of robbing a man two summers ago testified in their own defence in Supreme Court yesterday.
Keenan Anthony Tucker, 29, of Tankard Lane, Sandy's, and Keeman Fitzgerald Grant, 31, of Tween Walls, Sandy's, are charged with aggravated robbery and causing grievous bodily harm to Cecil Darrell in the early hours of August 19, 2000.
The two allegedly beat and stole $60 from Mr. Darrell on Cambridge Road in Somerset.
Yesterday Tucker told Assistant Justice Archibald Warner that on the night of August 18, he and some friends met at Woody's Bar in Dockyard for drinks, then headed to the Prison Officer's Recreational Club until approximately 3 a.m.
He also testified that after he left the club he met up with a female friend, who accompanied him to his house. He said some time later, after they had an argument, he went to her house and sat outside with her until sunrise.
He denied ever being on Cambridge Road at any time during August 19.
However, Grant admitted that he was on Cambridge Road on the night in question, but he was with Perry Simons - not Keenan Tucker.
"After leaving the Prison Officer's club I went to Cambridge Road with Perry Simons," he said. "When we got there, Perry went to talk to Cecil Darrell by the dry cleaners near MarketPlace."
Grant then said that after the two men conversed, Mr. Darrell made his way down to the Cambridge Apartments complex, and according to Grant, Simons punched Mr. Darrell in the face.
"He then pulled Cecil from the roadside into the parking lot and hit him in the face again. Darrell then fell to the ground and Perry started kicking him.
"I then heard Darrell say, `Take the money! Take the money!'"
Grant said that Simons then pocketed the money and they rode back to the club.
Crown counsel Charmaine Smith told Grant: "I am going to suggest that you were in fact on Cambridge Road at five that morning."
"Not true," responded Grant.
"Am I am also going to suggest that you were there with Keenan Tucker," said Mrs. Smith.
"No. No incident took place on Cambridge Road with Keenan and myself."
But when Mrs. Smith asked Grant why he did nothing when he saw Perry Simons beating up Mr. Darrell, he said: "Because it didn't concern me."
The trial continues today. Larry Mussenden is representing Grant, while Larry Scott is appearing on behalf of Tucker.
