The Army has applied to Bermuda's Development Applications Board for permission to develop a new citadel and other facilities at 10 and 18 North Street, opposite Bernard Park.

Major Elmer Pavey, the Salvation Army's divisional commander, said an offer had not yet been made for the land and much would depend on the outcome of the application.

Small residential apartments are now on the North Street site.

Both Memorial Hall on Court Street, the Army's Hamilton citadel since the 1920s, was put up for sale in February. Offers were received and are being considered, Major Pavey said.

The congregation's work has outgrown the present 8,000-square-foot facility, which has an auditorium that seats about 160 people, Major Pavey said.

The Salvation Army envisions an auditorium with seating for 200, a youth hall, a car park, and room for growth, he said.

He would not disclose cost estimates, but said the congregation had been putting money aside for a new citadel for years. "We might ask for some help (from the community), but it would be on a minimal basis.''.

Should their planning application be successful, it was unlikely construction would begin this year.
