Hubbard on the road to games by Lawrence Trott

The 20-year-old's performances this year in France, where he is now based, appear to have convinced Bermuda Olympic Association that he should be included in the Bermuda squad.

But the make-up of the cycling team will not be known until after three other members, Dana Henry, Mike Lee and McInnis Looby, have participated in an event in Canada at the end of this month in a bid to reach the qualifying standard for the 110 mile road race.

Initially the hope was to have all four participate together in the time trial but now only the latter three will go to Victoria later this month for the Canadian trials in a bid to meet the standards set down by the Bermuda Olympic Association and the Bermuda Bicycle Association.

A deadline of July 18 has been set for all athletes hoping to make the Bermuda team for the trip in August to British Columbia.

There are indications that Hubbard's accomplishments this season in France will be enough to earn him a place on the team to take part in the 110 mile race -- an event in which Hubbard is keen to take part.

"In principle I don't see a problem with what he's done but the others will have to go off and qualify,'' said BOA president Austin Woods last night.

The BBA have submitted to the BOA an official list of Hubbard's achievements this season which include four top 10 finishes in 10 events.

Among those are a first and a second in first category amateur races with 100 to 150 riders.

"If he goes then that is the event (road race) he will be competing in,'' said Bermuda Bicycle Association spokesman Vance Stevens.

"As far as the Bermuda Bicycle Association is concerned we're happy to put Elliott out there to represent Bermuda in cycling. We have three others who would like to go and have expressed an interest in doing something about it.'' Hubbard is in his third, and most successful, season of riding in France.

The BBA, through Stevens, have been in contact with Hubbard to determine his interest in representing his country. The youngster also represented Bermuda in the CAC Games in Mexico three years ago and the Pan Am Games in Cuba.

"They (BOA) need international results to look at and by racing overseas it helps me out a lot,'' said Hubbard last night.

"This will hopefully be a stepping stone to the Olympics, one of the stairs to further success.'' And while Hubbard feels he may have been a bit too young for the previous competitions he says the experience in France has put him in good stead.

"I've matured quite a bit and learned a lot in the three years I've been in France,'' he added. "I'll schedule my programme to try to peak for that event (Commonwealth).'' "I'm riding in a higher category than before so this is definitely my most successful season. I'm looking forward to a successful Games if all goes well.'' ELLIOTT HUBBARD -- `hopefully this will be a stepping stone to the Olympics'.
