Ivory Coast need a manager . . . now!
It is less than 100 days to go before the World Cup starts in South Africa and one of Africa's best teams, the Ivory Coast, still do not have a head coach. It is ridiculous and really angers me – and it is so typical. The Ivory Coast lost to South Korea 2-0 this week during a friendly and they need someone to come in and take control of the team.
They didn't reach their potential during the African Cup of Nations tournament recently and so the Ivory Coast's football federation decided in all their wisdom to fire the coach, Bosnian Vahid Halilhodzic. This is what happens when politics gets involved. I honestly believe that football is the only sport where any old Joe can get involved and have a lot of power. I would like to see the players stand up and say 'enough is enough'.
Now the Ivory Coast are scrambling to get a coach. This is the first time the World Cup has been held in Africa and I believe that the Ivory Coast could be Africa's best team – a team that could really go far in the World Cup and do some damage. But important decisions have to be made and you need the head coach there. This could ruin everything for the Ivory Coast – and Africa as a whole.
I hear that Guus Hiddink could come in at this late date and help them. I hope he can. I have always said that the Dutchman knows his stuff and it could be great for the Ivory Coast if he accepted the job. Right now Hiddink is coach of Russia but that contract is up this summer and he has already accepted the job as head coach of Turkey after the World Cup. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
I am pretty sure that Ivory Coast stars like captain Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, who both play for Chelsea, would love it if Hiddink came in as they played for him when he came in last year to guide Chelsea to a Champions League semi-final. But they really need someone to come in quickly
Many countries bound for South Africa this summer had warm-up matches during the week and England managed to get by Egypt 3-1 after going behind. While all of us talk about Rooney – and rightly so – there is one player that Fabio Capello must take with him to South Africa and that is Peter Crouch. At six foot seven inches tall, Crouch gives you that other option especially when your other strikers may be Rooney and Defoe – not exactly tall guys. But Crouch is more than just a tall fellow. He scored two goals against Egypt coming off the bench. In fact most of the goals he has scored for England seem to be when he comes off the bench and Capello may want to consider starting him. He now has 20 goals in 37 games for England and that is an excellent strike rate. Being how tall he is, Crouch should win most things in the air and he really does add a different dimension to England.
I also watched Argentina's 1-0 victory over Germany this week and hopefully manager Diego Maradona is settling on his team. Since he took over the job, Maradona has used 100 players – that is quite a lot putting it mildly.
But Argentina looked pretty good and they had Veron in midfield directing everything. Although he is getting up in years, Veron can still do the business.
Germany strangely looked a bit afraid of Argentina and I don't know about their keeper – he came out about 30 yards like a Kamikaze pilot for a ball. As it was Gonzalo Higuain collected the long clearance and slipped the ball past the keeper to score in the empty net.
n It was sad to see young Arsenal player Aaron Ramsey have his leg broken in the match against Stoke last weekend. Ramsey is a very talented player and although he will be out for the rest of the season, I understand he will make a full recovery and thankfully so.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and others lambasted Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross who tackled Ramsey but I do not believe that Shawcross meant to hurt the youngster. I have seen far worse tackles than that. I think he just went to win the ball and sometimes these things happen.
This weekend Arsenal will be in for another tough physical battle when they entertain Burnley who will have to fight and tackle hard if they want to get anything out of the game.
Chelsea lost 4-2 at home to Manchester City last weekend in a game dominated by the controversy between John Terry and Wayne Bridge. I know Manchester United and Arsenal were happy with that result.
The three have all played the same amount of games and Chelsea lead United by only a point with the Gunners three points behind Chelsea on 58 points. It seems no one wants to break free and Arsenal have the easier run in.
The quarter-finals of the FA Cup will be going on this weekend and Portsmouth can cheer up their fans by winning against Birmingham and making it to the semi-finals. Portsmouth have a huge amount of financial problems and their faithful fans deserve some good news. They have very, very loyal fans and there are a number living here in Bermuda as well. Hopefully they will do weel this weekend.
