Boston boys rule the court
locals as they ran away with four of the titles during the weekend finals of the OBM International Graded Squash Tournament at the Devonshire courts.
In the Men's A division, decided during round-robin play, Paul Ansdell, an English coach now working in Boston, took the championship by a single point over England's Duleep Adhihetty.
Ansdell impressed throughout the week with his fine lob and volley boast shots, but met his match against Bermuda's own Caribbean junior champion Nick Kyme who was the only player to beat the eventual champion, winning an exciting marathon 4-9, 9-3, 4-9, 9-2, 9-5.
That final match victory left Kyme in third place while Adhihetty stopped Bermudian Tommy Sherratt's bid for a second place finish with a 3-0 victory in their final match.
In the ladies round robin, Marlene West from the Cayman Islands stormed to victory with 3-0 wins over Lily Khaw, Janine Keeble and Denise Kyme.
And in the Men's B division, the battle of the Brewer brothers resulted in a convincing win for Murray who downed Richard 3-0. Murray had previously sneaked a 10-9 win in the fifth game to defeat his other brother Jan in the semi-finals.
The Ladies B competition saw Melissa Harney play well to reach the final, having undergone knee surgery last year. But in the title match she met a determined Lisa Lea Ray who ran out a 9-6, 9-7, 9-2 winner.
Men's C action saw an all-Boston final between Max Rivera and Christian Dijkhof and at one game apiece it looked to be heading for a lengthy contest before Dijkhof fell and twisted his knee, forcing him to retire.
Carola Cooper returned after a long lay-off to win the Ladies C title, beating Kristian Law 9-0, 9-2, 9-7; Doug Kline downed 15-year-old Stephen Smith 9-2, 1-9, 10-8, 9-6 to win the Men's D; and newcomer Diane Morgan lifted the Ladies D with a 9-5, 9-2, 9-6 victory over Stacey Evans-Coles.
Another Boston player, Chris Knicker, downed Tim Viney 3-0 in the Men's E final and Dave Andrews won the Men's G 3-0 against Cormac Timothy.
