Want to dance like Beyonce? Here’s your chance to learn how
Bermuda youngsters who want tips on how to dance like Rihanna or Beyonce are about to get their chance, as some of the world’s hottest choreographers stage a series of master classes on Saturday. The Groove Dance Workshop Marathon is organised by youth entertainment charity Troika.Oneika (Neeks Money) Phillips, who has collaborated with Rihanna and Puff Daddy, and Sean Bankhead who has worked with Beyoncé are among the choreographers who will share their expertise.Classes in a variety of dance styles are on offer for dancers age ten and older.“As we know a lot of young people are interested in dance. We thought it would be quite poignant to do a dance workshop, specifically featuring the most sought-after choreographers,” said Troika co-founder Seldon Woolridge. “This is the second year we have run the workshops. We first did it in 2011 and it was a huge success so we decided we would make sure it was a regular event.”They were particularly excited to have Sean Bankhead teaching intermediate and advanced hip hop workshops. The 24-year-old has travelled the world, dancing and choreographing.“We wanted to ensure that we had talent who were great at teaching and had a lot of exposure to the industry,” said Mr Woolridge. “A lot of the artists who have come down to lead the workshops have been eager and supportive of what we are doing on the Island. They see it as an opportunity to expand their artistic reach.”Kamerun Burgess, 18, took a workshop in 2011 with JaQuel Knight who choreographed Beyonce’s Superbowl Halftime Show performance this year.“I took part in the majority of the workshops,” he said. “I was trying to build my repertoire. It was a great experience. I didn’t know what to expect coming into it, but I knew to keep an open mind. If they were making allowances for our age, we couldn’t tell. The choreography was still intense even for people who had been dancing for years.”The University of South Florida psychology student says dancing is his passion. He runs a dance group with his brother Kioshi, called Krezed Ego.He was also one of 20 students chosen to participate in a Troika event later this month, For Your Entertainment Young Choreographers Showcase.“It was a big responsibility choosing to be in the showcase since I knew I had to balance my college work,” said Mr Burgess. “But I am really excited about it.”Said Troika co-founder, Shoa Bean: “A lot of people are surprised that we have a lot of young people in Bermuda interested in choreography. Many students are academic but also have an artistic side, and they don’t often have the opportunity to showcase that. Some of them will have participated in the workshops, but not all of them.”The Groove Dance Workshops Marathon takes place Saturday at the Berkeley Institute. Workshop costs vary.
