The luck of the draw fell Somerset and North Village’s way as the drawing of balls to break a three-way tie in the Dudley Eve competition left Robin Hood as the odd team out yesterday.

The draw was necessary after the three teams ended up with three points apiece and with the same goal difference and goals scored after all three games ended in 1-0 results.

Delroy O’Brien, the honourary vice president of the Bermuda Football Association, pulled the balls out of the cup yesterday at Police Recreation Club.

A tie also had to be broken in a similar fashion in 2015 when Dandy Town, Devonshire Cougars and Robin Hood finished in a three-way tie, with Hood and Hornets going through to the semi-finals as Cougars missed out.

“In accordance with the regulations of the Dudley Eve tournament, the tie-breaker is to be a drawing of lots — in this instance, balls,” said Shannon Burgess, chairman of the Competitions Committee.

Village were the first team out of the draw and were declared the group winners while Somerset were the runners-up.

Village will play Dandy Town in the second semi-final match on Wednesday, October 28 with Devonshire Cougars, the group B winners, taking on Somerset in the opening match at the National Sports Centre.

“To be eliminated from a competition via a penalty shootout is cruel, but this takes it to a new level,” admitted Burgess, the former Devonshire Colts and Bermuda captain. “However, these are the regulations and we must proceed.”

Larry Smith, assistant coach of Somerset who was at the draw, was relieved to see his team go through.

“We got on the good side of the draw and we live to play on,” Smith said.“It’s a blessing for us, at least we know who we’re preparing to play. We’ve got work to do.

“It’s one of those things where the three teams finished with the same points, goal difference and goals scored, so they had to conclude it some way.”

The draw was also made for the preliminary round of the FA Cup involving the First Division and Corona League teams with, five matches to be played next Sunday starting at noon.

The BFA also rescheduled the postponed Premier Division matches from September 20 for next Saturday and Sunday, with Dandy Town playing X-Roads on the Saturday night at Goose Gosling Field.
