Frick e-mail reveals problems on earlier tour

Kris Frick's decision to bail out on his Bermuda team-mates during last week's Digicel Caribbean Cup in the Cayman Islands was not an isolated incident, The Royal Gazette can confirm.

It was revealed yesterday that the teenaged utility player walked out on the Island's Under 20 national squad in disgust after being overlooked for the captaincy last July – just –48 hours prior to the team's departure for World Cup qualifiers in the Cayman Islands.

In a scathing e-mail that was copied to Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical director Derek Broadley – who was well aware of the youngster's previous transgressions prior to last week's misdemeanour in the Caribbean – the player's father, Stephen Frick, expressed outrage over PHC defender Marquel Waldron's appointment as Under 20 captain over his son.

He argued: "In regards to the captaincy, nothing personal against Marquel, but the hype around that, which was read in the press, was ridiculous. A no brainer!

"As for player respect for him (Waldron). . . come on! Many of the players don't understand the meaning of respect.

"They don't respect the game, the staff of any level, their team-mates, and as is often heard, they don't respect themselves.

"The team needs a role model and leader.

"I am not surprised to learn Kris was not chosen by the powers that be, but there is no comparison (at Under 20 level) to his knowledge of the game, extensive playing experience, intelligence and leadership ability; all that could have benefitted the squad.

"I believe there would have been as much respect for him (Kris) from a generally non respectful lot. Perhaps a no brainer for Kris to lead the squad.

"Kris was willing to assist and show leadership (as he has always done) to assist the team, the coaching and administrative staff and was willing to be a positive role model.

"I have become aware that Kris decided not to travel with the team. After carefully considering his decision, I believe it to be wise.

"He would only ever want to participate if it were beneficial to his team-mates, Bermuda and his development, and so assisting with our positive progressive future."

The 19 -year old Frick walked out on his Bermuda team-mates in the lead up to the Island's Dicigel match against St.Martin in the Caribbean last week after refusing to sit on the bench.

And despite last-ditch attempts to persuade the disgruntled player to stay, the Somerset Trojans player checked out of the team hotel the following morning, leaving his team-mates to fend for themselves.

It is now understood Frick risks having disciplinary action taken against him by local football's governing body – though BFA technical director Broadley is confident the matter can be "rectified" moving forward.

"I think Kris made the wrong decision and I've told both him and his father that," Broadley told The Royal Gazette.

"Every player I've worked with has been left out of the side at some point. There's a way to do things and I don't think what he (Frick) did was the right way.

"We must remember Kris is still a very young man and he's made a mistake.

"There are ways of rectifying his mistake and now he's gone away he may have a think about what he did.

"I think he took the easy option. The longer he leaves it, the harder it will be for people to accept. He's made it difficult for himself now."
