Hunt is on for Somerset's crown
local soccer's domestic programme kicks off with its first full slate of league matches.
The FA Cup champions who, a week ago, beat Somerset in the Charity Cup before following up with a win over PHC in their opening Martonmere Cup encounter in midweek, take on Devonshire Colts in what will be a replay of the FA Cup final from April.
Boulevard, who won that last meeting 4-1, will have an edge tomorrow, if only because they have two matches under their belts. Colts will be far from full strength with a number of key players missing, including last year's captain Craig Smith, Anthony Wilson, Jahmal Samuels, Keenan Burchall, Leonard Hypolite and Chris Wright who will not be playing this year.
It should be the perfect opportunity for Boulevard to captitalise against a makeshift Colts defence led by Derek Wright. For Boulevard, Carlos Pearman is still out injured.
Champions Somerset open the defence of their title at home against Dandy Town in what should be another interesting encounter.
Despite losing a number of quality players -- Neil Paynter, Burton Bruce, Voorhees Astwood, Dennis Robinson and Stevie Wade -- Town's team for their opening Martonmere Cup match in midweek had a familiar look about it with a couple of new signings in goalkeeper Cymande Davis and young Troy Lewis.
Otherwise, the likes of Lloyd Christopher, Wayne Campbell, Troy Durham, Wylie Rudo, Pernell Douglas, Walter Musson and Kris Martin are all there. Devarr Boyles and Paul Cann have now finished school and will be available for the whole season.
Somerset, too, have been involved in the transfer market during the summer, though they have gained more than they have lost. Veteran Dennis Brown has moved onto Vasco while the Trojans have gained goalkeeper Gladwin Edness, Chris Sabir and Clifton Anderson. All three were involved in Somerset's season-opener against Boulevard.
North Village will take on rebuilding PHC Zebras at Bernard Park, the former having boosted their defence with the signing of Derek Bell from Hotels while Elliott Jennings, Kevin Grant and Phillip Clarke are still there to lend their experience.
PHC will also be relying on experience, namely the likes of captain Mike Dill and Sammy Swan, to get them off to a good start.
None of the four teams involved in the other two matches have seen action yet, with Second Division champions Vasco at home to St. David's at PHC Stadium and St. George's entertaining the other promoted team Southampton Rangers at Wellington Oval.
Vasco, who had the strongest team in the Second Division last season, are even stronger this time with the signings of Dennis Brown, Burton Bruce, Voorhees Astwood, Dennis Robinson, Irving Burgess. Robinson and Burgess are expected to link up in attack with last season's top scorer Ricky Mallory, who netted 17 goals in the club's promotion push.
Home team St. George's will be looking for a good start to the season when they open their campaign against a Rangers team of whom little has been said.
They kept the bulk of last season's team and have also re-signed goalkeeper Randy Darrell, Mark DeMoura, Michael Brangman and Clinarke Dill.
St. George's have also picked up former players with Neil Paynter returning after six years with Dandy Town. Sinclair Gibbons and Franklyn and Carlos Greaves have also returned.
The Mini-Minor and Minor Six-A-Side tournament originally scheduled for today has been postponed indefinitely.
Picture taking for all youth players scheduled for today will now take place on October 9.
COME AND GET US -- Captain Brian Simons, pictured with last year's Martonmere Cup, and his Somerset Trojans will be the team everyone is gunning for this season.
