Taking a shine to Shoelery

If you love shoes, but can’t afford to buy a closet full, there’s now an attractive way to fake it — shoe jewellery.

Elizabeth Pile and her partner, Charlie Swan, have just started selling Shoelery accessories to dress up shoes, belts, hats and purses through their new company Pieces of the Rock.

“I found it while watching a television show in Canada,” said Ms Pile. “It’s a Canadian product. I thought it was amazing and different. I thought other people would probably also think it was a great idea.”

She loves shoes, but just can’t afford anymore to keep buying them.

“Who can really afford to keep putting down $200 to $300 for a new pair of shoes,” she said. “Half the time we might just wear them once. These accessories cost around $35 to $45 and make it seem as though you have a new pair of shoes.”

She is a stiletto woman, although she admits her stilettos are getting a little lower as time goes on. Still, she came dressed in a black pair that had daring silver spikes attached to the heels. The spikes were one of Shoelery’s offerings and gave the shoes an extra punch.

“Shoelery accessories either clip to the front or back of your shoe or feet around the heel,” she said. “There are so many different styles. You can have classic ones. You can have a little more daring.”

Everything can be easily removed and reused.

They started selling the accessories back in November, but they didn’t really start to take off until she put up a Facebook page. The likes on their page shot up to 300 within a matter of days.

“I have tried to put everything we have on the Facebook page,” said Ms Pile.

Now people are constantly calling them saying they want a particular item seen on the page. She personally delivers the item. She thought about opening her own store, but that’s not in the cards just yet and she is operating from home.

“Before, I worked in the salon industry for years,” said Ms Pile. “I have been unemployed now for a little while. Who doesn’t want to be their own boss? I saw the opportunity. I have been doing a lot of the pop up shops around the island and house parties.”

So far their clients have ranged from young women to ladies in their 80s who are looking for something to dress up a pair of shoes for church.

“The first party we did, a girl was going to a wedding,” said Ms Pile. “She had a blue dress and she found an accessory that just matched her black shoes and dress perfectly. She was ecstatic.”

Another time, she was selling her accessories outside of My Sereni-Tea on Reid Street when a lady came up to her. She had broken the front of her shoe and remembered that Ms Pile sold “shoe jewellery”.

“She was in a panic,” said Ms Pile. “She came back and picked out a piece of Shoelery and saved her shoes. She was thrilled.”

Ultimately, she and Mr Swan would like to sell products that would also appeal to visitors as well as locals.

“We are looking to expand and build up a business with other products,” said Mr Swan.
