Family expresses its gratitude to passers-by who helped put out car fire

Firefighters examine the front of David Brown and Nadiah Hajazi-Brown's Peugeot car after an unexplained fire erupted in the engine area on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Brown pulled the car to the side of the road when they noticed something wrong and Mrs Hijazi-Brown rushed to the rear door to remove their daughter Sophie from her child safety seat as flames jumped from under the hood.

A young family had a narrow escape after their car burst into flames during a weekend drive into Hamilton.Nadiah Hajazi-Brown and her husband, David Brown were travelling along South Road in Paget with their 14-month-old daughter and two friends just after 10am on Saturday, when their Peugeot car inexplicably caught fire.Mrs Hajazi-Brown, 34, a lawyer from Paget, said that the first sign of danger came when warning lights started flashing on the car’s dashboard. She said that within a matter of seconds, smoke began billowing from under the car’s hood and her quick-thinking husband, who was driving, pulled over onto the side of the road near Treetops Nursery. As Mrs Hajazi-Brown freed her daughter, Sophie, from her child safety seat at the rear of the car, flames began erupting from the hood.“As soon as we got out, the hood was set alight,” Mrs Hajazi-Brown said.“The flames were pretty thick and intense. They spread to one of the car’s tyres and the headlights were melting. We just had to stand back as far as we could and watch. There wasn’t really anything else we could do.”Mrs Hajazi-Brown was able to call emergency services from her cell phone, but they were unable to tackle the flames because the car had not been fitted with a fire extinguisher.“Basically the car was on fire and the traffic was slowing down to take a look,” Mrs Hajazi-Brown said.“But then two or three gentleman stopped — I think they had fire extinguishers in their cars — and started putting the fire out, by which time the emergency services had arrived and started dousing the car.”“It all happened so very, very quickly. I don’t know what would have happened had I been on my own because I don’t think I would have thought to pull over as quickly as my husband did.”The family were unable to speak to the man who helped put out the fire, but last night Mrs Hajazi-Brown, expressed her gratitude for their heroic efforts.“We would like to thank those individuals who stopped to help extinguish the fire, and a huge thanks also to the fire fighters for their quick response,” she said.Last night a police spokesman said: “Police officers and Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service personnel attended a reported car fire on South Road in Paget near the junction with Stowe Hill.“Apparently the car was being driven along South Road at the time, causing the driver to pull to the side of the road.“No one was injured in the incident; however the car apparently sustained front end damage. Traffic was temporarily delayed in the area until the damaged vehicle was towed away from the scene.”The cause of the fire has not been established, although Mrs Hajazi-Brown said firefighters informed her that an electrical fault was the prime suspect.
