Clevland give stars that extra push
Birthday boy Roger Leverock was forced to contain his festive spirit in leading Stars to a three-win win over Cleveland at St. John's field.
Coming to the wicket with the home team precariously placed at 81 for five, Leverock showed calm throughout in an unbeaten innings of 19 that kept Stars unbeaten after three matches in the Green Division.
Leverock put on 21 for the seventh wicket with Cleon Scotland (three) and then Mike Jones (six not out) joined him in an unbroken eighth-wicket stand worth 25 runs.
Cleveland could only fault themselves for falling short as they gave up 36 extras on a day when the asking total was so cheap.
Albert Simons bowled spiritedly for three for 23 from 10 overs and Cory Lowe claimed two for 25 from eight and Diallo Sharrieff one for 23 from 10. But the six byes, 18 leg byes and 12 wides were too much to overcome in the end.
Dexter Smith survived a chance on the first ball he faced to top-score for the batsmen with 22 and Anthony Manders made 16.
For their misgivings with the bat, Stars had a good day in the field as Cleveland took 48 overs to reach their total.
Curtis Jackson hit a solid 42, with three sixes and three fours, but after he went at 80 for three, the innings took a turn for the worse.
Allan Douglas was the next high man with 17 while Maxwell Musson made 13, Lowe 12 and Simons 10.
Gary and Allan Brangman both claimed two for 21 from nine overs with Arnold Manders taking two for 22 and Scotland two for 35.
St. George's 197 Somerset Bridge 132-9 Opener Eugene Foggo and tail-ender Kenny Phillips both hit half-centuries and spinner David Adams was back to his dazzling best with a five-wicket haul as St. George's picked up their first win of the season, by 65 runs at White Hill field.
Foggo was left to carry the St. George's batting after captain Wendell Smith was dismissed on the first ball of the match as the team then slumped to 18 for four and 32 for five.
A sixth-wicket stand of 74 between Foggo and Scott Carlington (37) posted the 100 after 30 overs before Phillips carried on with Foggo at Adams' departure as the pair added 74 for the eighth wicket before Phillips was run out for 53.
Foggo was eventually ninth out for 62 as former Warwick captain Robin Swan got him in his only over. Eugene Burgess and Durwood Cann were the most successful bowlers for Somerset Bridge, each taking two wickets.
Burgess, who also got the wicket of Graham Fox, finished with two for 26 from seven overs while Cann had two for 18 from his allotted 10 overs.
In the absence of opener Lee Raynor, Jr., Bridge found runs hard to come by as number 10 bat Gary Crofton top-scored with 25 not out while Gladwin Ingham hit 22 and Craig Brangman 19.
Adams led the St. George's bowling with five for 10 from 10 overs with three maidens as wicket-keeper Wendell Smith had three stumpings and a catch off the spinner.
Graham Fox had an economical one for 14 from 10 overs while spinner Eugene Foggo gave up just 12 runs in his eight overs.
St. David's 192 Warwick 109 St. David's picked up their third straight win in the Green section, though a stronger batting team than Warwick might have made it closer after the Islanders lost their last nine wickets for 101 runs at Southampton Oval.
The Eastern Counties champions had an opening stand of 91 between Allen Richardson (45) and Shea Pitcher (63) to thank for their 192 in 41.1 overs.
After Richardson departed Pitcher saw five partners dismissed in quick time as they slumped to 133 for five.
Shea Pitcher was sixth out on 151 as his captain Ken Pitcher was then dismissed without any addition to the score -- both falling to Theodore Morgan -- before number eight bat Herbie Bascome steered them towards the 200 with an unbeaten 28.
Morgan, the fifth bowler used by Warwick, finished with five for 30 while Mark Tucker claimed two for 36 and Sheridan Ming two for 37.
Warwick never made a serious chase for the runs after losing openers Morgan and Aaron Burrows with just eight runs on the board.
A third-wicket stand of 29 between Ming (12) and Jeff James (16) steadied the innings but in the space of four runs both were back in the pavilion as Cecil Pitcher struck twice to put the home team back on the skids at 41 for four.
The middle order offered some resistance as Kevin Dill (12) and Wallace Minors (25) carried them on to 76 before Minors and then captain Zuill put up the 100 before the sixth wicket fell, that of Minors on 103.
The team's last hope of victory went with him as the final five wickets added just six runs against the bowling of Ken Pitcher who picked up three for 11.
Cecil Pitcher finished with two for 21.
