Boy accused of setting fire to couch

A 16-year-old was yesterday accused wilful damage after allegedly starting a fire in a boy’s correctional home.Jiriko Powell was charged in Magistrates’ Court with setting a couch on fire in Oleander Cottage, where he himself is a resident, in a way that the fire was likely to spread to the rest of the building on September 19.Because the charge is indictable and must be heard in Supreme Court, the defendant was not required to enter a plea. He remained silent throughout proceedings.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner remanded Mr Powell, subject to a care order. He is scheduled to return to court on September 30 for the matter to be mentioned.
