Vintage car goes up in smoke
which survived 93 years on the road, but was wrecked in an instant by fire.
Mr. Art Hart and his passenger, Mrs. Natalie Hart, were proudly touring around Tobacco Bay when tragedy struck yesterday afternoon.
Despite the efforts of a passer-by the 1902 Knox, estimated to be worth about $40,000, was destroyed when the car's engine ignited.
It was a double tragedy.
The Harts were standing in for the owner, Mr. Fred Schumacher, from New Jersey, who had to fly home because of a family death.
The Knox was part of a rally around the Island organised by the Friends of Ancient Road Transportation in conjunction with The Horseless Carriage Club of America and the Veteran Motor Car Club of America.
In total, 49 cars, one motorcycle and one 83-year-old bus are taking part in the rally which comes to Hamilton today.
this morning, some will be parked along the south side of Front Street, between Parliament Street and Queen Street. Others will be along the driveway in front of the City Hall.
Tonight, at 9 p.m., Front Street will close as the vehicles drive in procession along the road.
