MindFrame PhotoVoice starts
Bermuda Hospitals Board has launched its annual art exhibition, MindFrame PhotoVoice, at the Bermuda Society of Arts. The exhibition will run until October 17.According to a spokeswoman, The MindFrame PhotoVoice Exhibition is a presentation of creative work created by patients of the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute and this year’s theme is ‘There’s A Person In Here: Voices Against Stigma’.Additionally, this year will for the first time feature jewellery alongside other exhibition presentations of art, photography and creative writing.PhotoVoice Project participant Stefan Davis aided in the conceptualisation of the theme. He explained that when he was growing up he saw how people with mental illness were stigmatised against and believed that participating in the exhibition would allow people to see a different side of those with mental illnesses.“This was the first time I have been involved with PhotoVoice and it was a good experience.“I had a lot of fun taking pictures and it was the first time I’d been this side of the camera. It was a great adventure taking pictures of old spots where I used to go as a child,” said Mr Davis. Also, in light of the recent passing of The Royal Gazette photographer Tamell Simons, the MindFrame PhotoVoice organisers have chosen to rename the People’s Choice Award for photography in his memory.“The Photography People’s Choice Award will be renamed the Tamell Simons Photography Award, in memory of Tamell Simons who worked with service users on the first few years of the PhotoVoice Project and sadly passed away this year,” said the spokeswoman.Morrisa Rogers, the Clinical Supervisor, Allied Health at MAWI, also spoke about the exhibition.“This exhibition is a unique opportunity for our service users to communicate their experiences and showcase their talents to the people of Bermuda through paintings, necklaces, photographs and poetry.“People who are recovering from mental health issues are very often stigmatised and marginalised in everyday life.“ This exhibition gives the people who are often not heard in society a creative voice in a community setting.“Our message is that they are people too and we hope the community comes out to learn and reflect on the world from their perspective.”
