Teen learns a quick lesson

Allan Outerbridge appeared in Magistrates' Court to plead guilty to the charge of speeding at 48 kph and driving while disqualified last month.

The St. George's youth was riding at a speed nearly twice the allowable limit in St. George's when he was stopped on December 10. The speed limit in the town and along Cahow Way, St. George's is 25kph.

Outerbridge, who will be 18 next month, was stopped at the junction of Old Maid's Lane where officers observed he was riding an 80cc cycle. The age for riding motor cycles is 18.

Magistrate Edward King said he would consider the speeding violation as though Outerbridge was riding at 58 kph elsewhere on the Island.

The consequent fine was $215. Mr. King also ordered Outerbridge to pay $200 for driving while disqualified.

When asked whether he would mind being disqualified, Outerbridge said, "I'm staying away from bikes for now.'' Acting Senior Magistrate Edward King explained he would disqualify the young man from riding all motor cycles for six months -- something for which he had no licence anyway because of his age.

But, Outerbridge replied, "You can give me auxiliary too.'' Mr. King stopped at $415 in fines and disqualification from all motor cycles for six months.
