Bell, Sherratt face showdown

Ryan Bell and Tommy Sherratt remain on course to meet in the Division One final of the Shell Divisional Handicap squash tournament.

The pair are both through to the quarter-finals of the event, being held at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.

Bell is the division's top seed, while Sherratt is the defending champion.

The handicap system used in the event has already caused a number of upsets with Andrew Robinson, a member of the Bermuda junior team, defeating the number eight and nine seeds to earn a berth in the last eight against newcomer Nick Wiffen.

Wiffen also caused a shock by seeing off number five seed Richard Brewer.

Albert Steede, more usually associated with cricket, also stood out by defeating the number 10 and eight seeds respectively.

Steede has shown great improvement in his game in recent months and will provide some stiff competition for Sherratt in their clash tonight.

Sherratt can count himself somewhat fortunate to reach the quarter-finals after he was forced to go down to the wire in his second round match before getting past Chris Thornton 15-14 in the final game. Thornton led 2-0 and looked likely to join the giant killers by earning a deserved victory over the higher ranked player.

However, despite an obvious lack of match fitness Sherratt fought it out to the end and scraped through.

Division One was not the only category to produce some close matches with the lower divisions also providing some great contests.

In Division Four, Rose Sheppard produced a monumental comeback against Anne Culligan.

Culligan led 2-0, but found the going tough as she had a large deficit to make up under the handicap system.

This allowed Sheppard back into the match and she took the third game 15-7. The last two games were as close as could be with Sheppard narrowly defeating Culligan 15-14, 15-14 to take the match.

The Third Division also produced an excellent match when Geralyn Counsell defeated Kevin Buckley despite Buckley outscoring her 72 points to 54. Buckley scored the maximum points possible without claiming victory and was very gracious in defeat.
