Police release latest crime statistics
Sexual assaults, robbery and offences against children increased in the third quarter of 2011.However crime levels overall fell during that period, according to police statistics released this evening.Officers reported a “significant recovery” of weapons and ammunition due to an increase in community assistance with one imitation firearm handed in at Somerset Police Station this morning.There were also seven convictions for gun-related crime, with a further 16 people indicted and awaiting trial.The number of confirmed firearms incidents rose by ten, to 37 compared with the six-month figure. Those incidents saw two people injured and five firearms, one imitation firearm and 400 rounds of live ammunition recovered by police.There was also a “significant increase” in the amount and value of drugs seized by officers this quarter.An estimated $41.9 million worth of drugs were seized following joint operations with HM Customs and other law enforcement partners here and abroad.According to police, the combined value of drugs seized this year now stands at $48.85 million.
