Squash team in search of Caribbean success

Bermuda's men's squash team will be looking to do something they have not done for the past 10 years this week -- win away from home.

The squad travel to Grand Cayman today for the annual Rosebowl Championships and are expected to put up a good fight against their Caribbean neighbours -- Cayman, Jamaica and Barbados.

Bermuda have assistant national coach Gary Plumstead at number one, national champion Nick Kyme at number two, former Canadian national junior player Ryan Bell at three, Chase Toogood at four and Harry Mackenzie at five.

But they're not the only players representing the Island, as the men's B team, ladies' team and veterans' team will also be making the trip south.

The B team are also expected to do well with their mix of former A team players and up and coming juniors.

The squad consists of captain Richard Brewer, Mel Caines, James Stout, Jan Brewer and Phil Barnes.

Coach Plumstead said: "The team have a lot of youth and experience on their side and are hoping to win their section.'' Despite several setbacks, the ladies team also hope to be competitive.

At number one is captain Tessa MacKenzie and she is followed by Suzanne Rose, Nicola Swain, Jene Charles, Julie Brewer and Leanne Wettlaufer.

"Although lacking in experience the team still hope to make a few surprises,'' the coach added.

The veterans team have been plagued by injuries over the past few months but are hoping to have made a full recovery by the start of the tournament.

"Headed by John Stout who is currently the over 45s national champion, and including captain Tony Prentice, Roger Sherratt, Rod Holloway, Phil Spencer, Denise Kyme and Christine Barnes, the team are looking their strongest for years and are likely to bring home a trophy,'' said Plumstead.
