Stop butchering the trees
April 27, 2012Dear Sir,On Friday last whilst driving along Harrington Sound Road, I came across a group of workers who had cut down an entire established grove of palm trees. Now presumably this exercise is to remove trees that are entangled in overhead cable and electric wires to guard against interruption of power services, however, what has truly annoyed me is the way the destruction of vegetation is occurring. The area to which I am referring is between the entrance of Tom Moore’s Tavern and the junction of Wilkinson Avenue — the Dingles Bay area. Not only do they cut down the few key trees that could cause power outage, but every tree below and around the area is cut or hacked. Some palms have been cut at ground level and others show half a trunk remaining. This same exercise also occurred on Wilkinson Avenue about six to eight weeks ago leaving palm trunks five to seven feet in the air. Certainly we should be sensible here and cut only the tree(s) that will cause direct entanglement. We are losing too much vegetation through poor construction practices of bulldozing entire lots prior to construction with only a few trees if any, replanted and now the road side butchers are removing even more vegetation. Our rainfall currently is behind ten inches this year, eight or so inches behind the year before and the year before that was also behind and it is the result of the Island being too hot because of the reduction in vegetation and more concrete. Will the environmentalists please investigate these practices of butchering the roadsides.KATHY LLOYD-HINES
