Nest, maternity and baby — this little shop on the corner of Dundonald Street and Cedar Avenue sounds cosy, and it is.The owner, Lara Leite, was inspired to start the maternity and baby store when she was expecting her son, now about a year and half old.“I was frustrated with not being able to source maternity clothes on the Island,” she said.“And, if you are purchasing clothes overseas at an earlier stage of your pregnancy, you can’t predict how big or small you’re going to be. You buy something and it may not fit when you reach your last trimester.”Ms Leite said there are additional difficulties. “With online purchasing, in Bermuda there is no free shipping, and returns are difficult. Particularly with maternity, you don’t know whether or not it will fit, because you’re not buying maternity wear all the time.“And in the later stages, when I was looking for baby gear and goods, I didn’t want to compromise so I sourced the brands I was accustomed to, and brought them in. My friends and family members who saw I had superior quality wanted to know where I had got them.”And so, Nest was born. She opened the store a week ago, and already young mothers are finding their way to 6 Dundonald Street. “When I see people come in, they sigh a sigh of relief because there is a nursing bra, for example. She carries quality maternity brands at higher-end price points. “They are beautiful quality — they are premium brands,” she said. The maternity wear includes a label that the Duchess of Cambridge has been wearing during her pregnancy, and she also carries beautiful and practical transitional clothing, which allows new mothers to continue to wear the pieces while recovering from pregnancy. “You get more use out of your wardrobe,” she said. “I wear the pieces myself — you really can wear them afterwards.“In the fall I’ll be bringing in high-end maternity designer jeans. “You wear them every day, so they are of a high quality,” she said.In addition, she has some baby wear created from organic fabrics, and also carries swaddling blankets. “They are awesome for a baby who is not sleeping,” she said. She also carries a selection of high quality, very soft toys for young children, including brands which famous children such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s youngsters have been spotted with, as has Suri Cruise.Ms Leite said because other retailers do a good job of bringing in small children’s clothing she decided not to carry very much, but she has some special occasion wear and lines created from organic fabrics. “I bring them in in small quantities as well,” she said.“We also have nursing bras and skin care — things I found I couldn’t source. The skin care includes creams and oils for preventing stretch marks, as well as sunscreen for mom’s face, and another sunscreen for baby and mom.“I will also be bringing in strollers — the strollers you find in Bermuda are bulky — but ours are modular so you can clip the seats, which are also car seats, into compact frames, for example. They are premium quality.”She is open Monday through Friday until 5.30 in the evening, and on Saturdays from 10am to 5pm.
