Golf tourney a tourism bonanza
coverage of the Gillette Tour Challenge Championship.
On Tuesday, when the $1.95 million one-day event tees off at the Mid Ocean Golf Club, TV will record the action for a special showcase programme to be shown at peak time over Thanksgiving weekend.
And Tourism officials have negotiated a deal which will give the Island guaranteed exposure in many forms -- for much less than regular network TV commercials.
In addition to the TV coverage itself, Gillette will be bringing hundreds of corporate guests to Bermuda for the event -- bringing the possibility of future vacation business.
Several top PGA, Senior PGA and LPGA pros are to take part in tournament, including John Daly, Tom Watson and Ryder Cup winner Jim Furyk.
The ABC network is to film the golf and in between the games, Bermuda will feature heavily. In addition, there will be four 30-second dedicated tourism ads during commercial breaks.
Tourism has pumped $400,000 into the contest and acting Director of Tourism Cherrie Whitter said she believes the package offers good value.
"We have the opportunity to create awareness of Bermuda as a golf destination,'' she said.
And in the future she believes it could become focal point or "conversion'' for package holidays -- similar to how the jazz festival has developed.
Although several thousand people are expected to watch the action, golfing holidays have not been purposely promoted around the event.
But Mid Ocean Club's Michael Dunkley said in addition to the TV coverage, the recommendations from the golfers and corporate clients will help to put Bermuda on the golfing map.
"I noticed from the first year that golfers that come here have heard a lot about Bermuda but have not been, they will come back for holidays,'' Mr.
Dunkley said.
"And these are the sort of people we want to be attracting, with disposable income to enjoy the amenities we have to offer.'' The show will be broadcast by ABC at prime time on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend -- bringing Bermuda into the homes of millions of golf-loving Americans.
