Pro Sims tees off again Down Under

Bermuda pro Michael Sims will tee it up tomorrow in Australia on the second Nationwide Tour event of the 2010 season.

Sims finished in a tie for 47th place last Sunday in the opening event of the tour – the New Zealand Open staged at the Hills Golf Club in Queenstown in the South Island.

This week's tournament – the Moonah Classic – will be held at Moonah Links in Fingal, Victoria, Australia and offers a $600,000 purse with the winner taking home $108,000.

During last week's tournament, Sims opened his account with a even-par 72 but then enjoyed a superb four-under 68 in the second round to make the cut.

He carded a one-under 71 on the Saturday – his 31st birthday – but slumped to a five-over par 77 to bring about a disappointing end. He had begun Sunday's round in a tie for 28th before the the strong winds got the better of him.

The winner in New Zealand was American Robert Gates who finshed one shot ahead over Australian Michael Dodt.

This week's tournament will be played at the Open Course at Moonah Links.

Peter Thomson, who won the British Open five times, said of the course which he designed: "It is the first ever 18 holes built and prepared for a national championship, with exceptional viewing platforms for spectators. It is one of the longest courses in Australia, and probably in the world in this category.

"It measures 6,783 metres, so it offers more than a casual stroll in the outdoors. It is a mighty and ferocious test of golfing ability, the likes of which even the top pros only occasionally experience. In terms of difficulty, I estimate a club-handicapper player would merit an extra eight strokes assistance to return a net par score, yet the course has great flexibility."

After playing in this week's tournament Sims is expected to compete in the Panama Claro Championship from February 25-28 and then the Bogata Open in Colombia from March 4-7 before the tour returns to the United States with the Chitimacha Louisiana Open from March 25-28.

n Scott Roy won the first event of the new Jack Daniels Tour at Mid Ocean Club on Monday, firing a one-over par 72 to claim a four-shot win over Paul Adams.

Roy's solid golf always left him as the man to beat, but his job was made far easier by his opponents' mistakes, and the notable absences of Port Royal pair Daniel Augustus and Dwayne Pearman.

Veteran professional Eardley Jones made the early running, rattling off four birdies in the first nine holes, but slipped up on the back nine and eventually carded an eight-over par 79.

Cornell Bean and Brian Morris pushed Adams close for second, but fell apart on the final hole, both carding double-bogeys to finish on 78.

Adams was the closest to Roy for much of the day but problems with a new putter left him struggling to keep up and in the end Roy won comfortably.

Next week's event is at Belmont Hills, a course where the scores are likely to be much lower, and a place where Augustus carded a 64 last year.
