Double bogeys ruin Sims' weekend

Michael Sims will today look back on one of the most bizarre weekends of his professional golfing career . . . and in all likelihood he won't be happy.

Despite making the cut at the Chattanooga Classic in Tennessee – the penultimate regular season event on the Nationwide Tour – and getting in the money, he ended up closer to the bottom of the leaderboard than the top after he had given himself every chance to register yet another top-20 finish.

More importantly he didn't improve on his 65th place on the moneylist where he started the week.

In 40 rollercoaster holes over the weekend at the 7,149-yard, par-72 Black Creek Club outside Chattanooga – he needed to play four holes on Saturday morning to complete a rain-delayed second round – the Bermudian, perhaps the most unpredictable player on Tour, carded one eagle and 10 birdies.

And five of those birdies came in a stunning seven-hole stretch during a blistering start to the third round when he went to five-under-par on the day and nine-under for the tournament, putting him in touch with the leaders.

But it quickly unravelled. As fast he had climbed up the leaderboard he plumetted down.

His second round finish earlier in the day had ended with a double-bogey at the 18th and there were more blunders to come.

At the same hole he made bogey in the third round and compounded that with a double bogey at the eighth, eventually finishing with a three-under 69.

Two more double bogeys and another dropped shot in his first 12 holes in the final round yesterday left him at five-over on the day at just three-under overall.

Yet amazingly he fought back, posting birdie at the 13th, eagle at the 14th and birdie at the 18th – the hole that had troubled him all weekend.

Those 'doubles' may prove costly in his quest to finish the season in the Tour's top 60 and earn a place in the Tour Championship in less than two weeks' time.

His final score of seven-under-par 282 (69-71-69-73) left him in a tie for 54th from the 70 players who made the cut.

His winnings of $1,600 took his overall earnings for the season to $87,864 but that wasn't sufficient to change his position on the rankings.

Currently in 60th place is B.J.Staten with $91,811.

What is now certain is that Sims will have to make the cut again and make a cheque for at least $4,000 at this week's final regular Tour event – the $625,000 Miccosukee Championship at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club in Miami – to have any chance of earning his place in the million dollar Championship at the Daniel Island Club in Charleston, South Carolina a week later.

The top 60 after Miccosukee will be guaranteed a place on the Nationwide Tour next season, and the top 25 after the Tour Championship will become eligibe to play on the main PGA Tour.

Yesterday's winner was Canadian Chris Baryal at 19-under-par 269. He picked up a winner's cheque of $90,000.
