Berkeley in a class by themselves
gained some satisfaction from breaking three of the five records to fall during the two-day Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships which ended yesterday at the National Stadium.
Berkeley emerged as winners of five of the six age groups -- Warwick Secondary got the other, the boys under 15 -- and totalled 384 points to win by a convincing margin over Warwick Secondary who collected 210 points.
Whitney were third overall on 194 points while Warwick Academy were fourth, Saltus fifth, Sandys Secondary sixth, Northlands seventh, St. George's eighth and Bermuda High ninth.
Berkeley's success has much to do with the performances of the likes of Carifta athletes Sharif Taylor, Donte Hunt, Michael Donawa and Gina Cann who had no less than seven wins between them yesterday.
Donawa established a new record in the 3,000 metres final yesterday when he shattered the old mark set by Kavin Pearson, a former Marathon Derby winner, in 1982, in a time of 9:21.5.
Donawa knocked a massive 11 seconds off that time when he led home the over-15 field in 9:09.61.
Yesterday two more records were set to bring the total for the two-day meet to five. Quite significant were the achievements of Tiffany Scraders in the 200 metres under 13 and Leslie Trew in the boys under 13 javelin.
Scraders was forced to run the 200 metres final twice in the span of an hour after it was realised that the girls actually started on the wrong staggers -- the 400 metre marks.
However, the Warwick Secondary student ran a race that even former sprint queen Debbie Jones would have been proud of as her time of 26.2 seconds eclipsed Jones' record of 26.7 set way back in 1971.
Trew, a solidly-built first-year student at Sandys Secondary, broke the 17-year old javelin record of 114 feet, two inches -- not once but twice.
The first came with his very first throw of 115 feet and with his sixth and final throw the five-foot-seven, 150-pound 12-year-old showed his great promise by going over the mark again, this time 119 feet, two inches which is an improvement of five feet over the previous mark set by W.Bores in 1977.
"I was thinking about it (record) yesterday,'' admitted Trew. "On my first throw I just felt confident and was telling Terry (javelin official Terrylyn Paynter) that I was going for the record. I just ran and threw it and got 115 feet.'' The left-hander later also won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet and then showed his versatility by competing in the 100 metres final where he placed sixth.
Other outstanding individual performances included Monique Hunt of Warwick Academy who won the 100 and 200 metres and long jump, Hunt of Berkeley who won the 100 and 200 metres and Taylor of Berkeley who took gold in the 400 and 800 metres and silver in the 100 metres.
Rohaan Simons of Warwick Secondary beat Stephen Woodley in the long jump as Woodley had to settle for third behind Aaron Bean of St. George's Secondary.
In the under 15 girls, Gina Cann of Berkeley won in the 100 and 200 metres while school-mate Damon Ming in the under 15 boys had success in the 800 and triple jump.
The two-day event was climaxed by the relay events as Berkeley once again showed their domination by winning four of the six events. Warwick Secondary took team honours in the under 15 girls (Julee Rabain, Tia Warner, Tahirah Hill and Rosha Gibbons) and under 15 boys (Torrick Williams, Tariq Hewey, Bilal Binns and George Scott) while Berkeley won the under 15 boys, under 13 girls, over 15 boys and over 15 girls.
The Berkeley teams were: Debrina Simons, Joneek Prodivence, Naynette Bean and Tenyia Richardson in the under 13 girls and John Berry Nusum, Kurt Dowling, Jecoa Burrows and Jelani Scott in the under 13 boys.
The over 15 girls team was Giovanna Watson, Takisha Gobson, Nadia Wade and Kia Georges while the over 15 boys team was made up of Donte Hunt, Sharif Taylor, Torry Davis and Corey Dowling.
