Let?s hear it for the ?next Jessye Norman?

When Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman steps into the spotlight as the featured artist of the Ensemble Singers? concert on Saturday evening at Wesley Methodist Church, it will be with an abundance of critical acclaim surrounding her.

Superlatives abound among international critics when describing her voice, her stage presence, and her delivery, be it in opera, lieder, spirituals, or other genre.

?Gives you goose bumps?; ?huge, piercing tone and majestic phrasing?; ?gigantic voice, astonishingly supple and deeply moving?; ?charisma from here to Tokyo? and ?vibrantly exciting star quality? are but a sampling. It has even been predicted that Ms Brueggergosman ?may be one of the great voices of the 21st century?.

More than once her voice and style have been likened to that of the international opera diva, Jessye Norman, with whom she has worked, and indeed she has already been dubbed ?the next Jessye Norman?.

Regularly filling concert venues wherever she appears in her native Canada, Ms Brueggergosman has also made her mark wherever she has appeared internationally. In addition to her stunning voice, her wide-ranging repertoire ensures that she is in constant demand to perform in many of the world?s major opera houses, concert halls and cathedrals. She has worked with renowned orchestras, conductors and distinguished artists and given command performances before royalty and heads of state.

A graduate of the University of Toronto, who completed her post-graduate studies in Germany, Ms Brueggergosman has swept top honours and awards in many prestigious international competitions.

A recording artist whose newest album, ?Extase?, is due out this autumn, the singer has also been the subject of a full-length feature documentary by the Canadian Broadcasting Company documentary, and a short film, ?Go Diva!? by the Bravo network.

Regarding her magnificent voice and talent as God-given gifts, Ms Brueggergosman sees her career as a reflection of His will for her life, and a representation of her covenant with Him. Through her music she aims to honour God an be a witness for His love.

For her Bermuda debut the dynamic young star will sing works by Ravel, Schubert and Mendelssohn, as well as joining the Ensemble Singers in traditional spirituals, ?Ave Maria?, and a composition by Dett.

Directing Ms Brueggergosman and The Ensemble Singers, formerly known as Word, will be well-known local musician and choir director Lloyd Matthew.

Tickets ($40) for Saturday?s concert, which begins at 8 p.m. are available from The Music Box, Wesley Methodist Church office between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. until Friday, as well as members of the Ensemble Singers.
