Police pay tribute to two of Island's brightest youngsters

The achievements of two of the Island's most outstanding youngsters were recognised yesterday with one of the highest accolades awarded by the Bermuda Police Service.

Mr. Tarik Smith, 18, and 19-year-old Miss Chrystal Anderson were judged the overall winners in the Service's Outstanding Youth Awards, which also honoured 15 other young Bermudians.

The awards were presented last night by the Deputy Police Commissioner, Mr.

Michael Mylod, who said: "People are full of criticism of the young.

"We blame all the ills of our society on the young, conveniently forgetting that we did much the same things when we were that age.

"The vast majority of young people go on building their lives, making something of it and contributing. It bodes well for Bermuda's future that we produce such super young people as we have seen at these awards.'' An accomplished musician and sportsman, Mr. Smith, of Pearman's Hill, Warwick, recently graduated from the Post Graduate year at Saltus Grammar School, having completed the senior year with nine GCE `O' Level passes.

Among his many achievements, he was selected to attend the 1993 World Student Debating Championships in Canada where he was awarded the Spirit of the World Award.

Miss Anderson, of Princess Estate, Pembroke, is a student at Bermuda College who hopes to become a pharmacist. She graduated from the Berkeley Institute with double honours and 13 GCE `O' Levels.

Fluent in Spanish, Miss Anderson won the Most Outstanding Student Award several times at Berkeley and is active in the community working with the Girl Guide Association, the Cross Culture Youth Club and also volunteers at the Bermuda Zoological Society.

Melvin Douglas, 19, of My Lord's Bay Lane, Hamilton Parish.
