The traditional “Black Friday” sales will go ahead – but with safety rules designed to fight the spread of Covid-19, the Chamber of Commerce said today.

Kendaree Burgess, the chief executive of the chamber, and Lorraine Shailer, its chairwoman, negotiated the rules for its members.

Retailers will be expected to stick to existing Covid-19 rules and follow extra ones because of the high volume of shoppers expected.

Ms Burgess said: “We are incredibly pleased to continue the support of Bermuda’s retail sector by successfully confirming Black Friday sales events can take place.

“The Chamber of Commerce retail division has worked diligently on behalf of its members to ensure these events take place.

“We encourage all residents to support retailers during the Black Friday sales period, while maintaining Covid protocols.”

Mask wearing, hand sanitisation, and social distancing must be maintained in stores and in queues for the event, scheduled for November 27 and regarded as the start of the Christmas shopping season.

Stores should also spread out events over several days if possible to maximise the possibility of uptake but minimise the need for crowds to rush in to take advantage of promotions.

A member of staff must be on duty at the door to monitor numbers entering the store to ensure safe limits and to enforce mask wearing, hand sanitisation and contact tracing details.

Opening hours should be kept between 6am and 10pm.

Advertising for Black Friday events must also include a reminder on Covid-19 safety rules.
