No major selection headaches for Somerset

Last year the Somerset Cup Match selectors had an early night selecting their final Cup Match XI.

And this year promises to be the same as the cup holders are only expected to make one change to their team from last year?s squad.

Reportedly on the bubble is club opener Sheridan (Baldy) Ming who has failed to rediscover the form which earned the player a spot on the champion?s team in 2002.

Possibly on the verge of making an entrance on to the Cup Match scene is 19 year-old all-rounder Jacobi Robinson who has been a substitute for the past several seasons at Somerset and veteran Willow Cuts all-rounder Reggie Tucker Jr.

Robinson has enjoyed a solid season with both bat and ball despite having to alter his bowling action ? a flaw detected earlier this year while in attendance at Port Elizabeth Cricket Academy ? in South Africa while Tucker has likewise impressed at Cuts this season.

Robinson could follow in the footsteps of father Wayne (Spike) Richardson and uncle Jeff Richardson ? current coach at the West End club ? as Somerset Cup Match players while Tucker?s father Reggie Sr. also featured for the West Enders in the annual classic.

Other players who could get the nudge include Bailey?s Bay?s Stephen Outerbridge who was a reserve last year, former Somerset Cup Match fast bowler Kevin Hurdle and hard-hitting middle order batsman James Celestine, a reserve for St.George?s last year at Wellington Oval.

In the event that Ming falls out of favour with the selectors, it?s highly anticipated former Somerset skipper Albert Steede ? who was replaced by Janeiro Tucker earlier this spring ? could be elevated up the order to open the champion?s innings with Western Stars team-mate Jermaine Postlethwaite, a colt last year and great nephew of the legendary Alma (Champ) Hunt.

Another Stars player expected to comfortably retain his spot is South African import Saleem Mukuddem.

Mukuddem eclipsed Charlie Marshall?s 23-year-old record for the highest individual score by a colt last year at Wellington Oval.

Stars wicket keeper Jekon Edness, who accompanied Robinson in South Africa, and Somerset league player Azeem Pitcher have made themselves unavailable as the pair head off to Jamaica tomorrow with the Island?s Under 23 national squad.

Other than that, the bulk of the champion?s team should remain intact. Somerset made two changes to their team last year in the form of colts Postlethwaite and Mukuddem for the out-of-favour Curtis Jackson and retired Richard (Fishhooks) Basden who many feel still had many years of service to give to the club.

One player Somerset were seeking to acquire the services of this year is Warwick batsman Dion Stovell, who despite paying his dues at the club, has shown absolutely no interests in playing in the annual mid-summer classic.

Stovell, a hard-hitting early-order bat, seems to be leaning more towards playing football these days, something he?s stated on record in the past with this newspaper.

The champions completed their first Cup Match trial match under floodlights last Wednesday evening with Reggie Tucker Jr. stealing the limelight with a masterful innings of 51.

Somerset will hold their final trial match tomorrow at the club, beginning at 10 a.m.

The following players have been asked to be at the grounds no later than 9 a.m.: J.Tucker (capt), K.Tucker, A.Steede, S.Ming, W.White, J.Postlethwaite, D.Pilgrim, C.Hill, D.Leverock, H.Durham, S.Mukuddem, D.Wade, D.Gibbs, J.Robinson, S.Hollis, R.Tucker Jr, J.Celestine, K.Hurdle, R.Jones, J.DeSilva, M.Bassett, K.Bashir
