Friend moves to quash rumours surrounding deadly crash
A witness to the road death of Jason Binns yesterday moved to quash rumours that Police were involved in his death.
Lifelong friend Jason Simons said he was riding with Mr. Binns in the early hours of last Wednesday morning.
He said Mr. Binns, 22, appeared to black out or fall asleep and his bike drifted across Middle Road, Southampton and ran into a wall.
Mr. Simons said he had heard numerous rumours that Mr. Binns was chased by Police and that a motorcycle Police officer had kicked him off his bike.
?It?s really starting to irritate me because every person that I see I have to tell them the story too,? Mr. Simons said. ?It?s like everyone has something to say.
?There were no Police involved in his accident. Jason was riding his bike and he blacked out and drifted across the lane and then he ran into the wall.
?He didn?t flinch, he didn?t break or swerve. He lowered his head like he fell asleep and he rode straight into the wall. That?s what happened.?
Mr. Simons said it was hurtful to hear the rumours about the Police kicking Jason off his bike and said: ?It didn?t happen that way.
?Anyone who knows Jason, would know that he is not someone, who would run from the cops. He has no reason to.?
?We came here to raise money together, so that he could study architecture and I could go back and study communications.?
Mr. Binns died after suffering head and internal injuries in the accident on Port Royal stretch.
Mr. Simons said he flagged Police down ?maybe 25 seconds after the accident happened?.
?Then the fire engine came from Port Royal (Fire Station) and they put Jason?s neck in a brace,? he said. ?A few minutes later the ambulance came and I rode down to his sister?s house (Ren?e Francis) and she went to the hospital.?
Mr. Simons said he thought Jason fell asleep while riding his bike.
?I think he was tired, because he works an 80-hour week,? said Mr. Simons, who said they had been friends since kindergarten.
?Earlier we had gone to the music studio up in Southampton, near Camp Hill, then we went to get something to eat and then we went to (Club) Malabar for a hot minute.
?We were there for a couple of hours and had two beers and Jason was fine for the whole trip from Dockyard and then he just closed his eyes.
?I was riding 50 to 70 feet in behind him.?
Mr. Binns? sisters had also heard the rumours about Police involvement in the accident.
But Ms Francis said: ?I don?t know why people are saying that. ?I don?t think that happened, because his friend wouldn?t lie to me. I don?t believe that happened.?
Mr. Binns? other sister, Kim Thomas-Phillips, said the family had heard many rumours and Mr. Simons had just told them what happened.
?I am curious why he (the person spreading the rumours) would fabricate it,? she said, ?I just want the facts.
?We all like conspiracy theories, but with him working an 80-hour week, being sleep deprived because he was always trying to push himself; he probably dropped his head down and drifted. It is just a tragic, tragic accident.?
