Man who assaulted policeman to spend Christmas, New Year's on remand

An unemployed man yesterday admitted he nearly ran an officer over in an attempt to avoid arrest.Aswad Wilson, of Warwick, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to assaulting an officer in an attempt to pervert the course of justice.Crown counsel Auralee Cassidy offered no evidence of a second charge of escaping lawful custody.Officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on St Mary’s Road around 9.10pm on October 14.They found Wilson, who they recognised, sitting outside the house. The officers attempted to arrest the 27-year-old on another matter, but he fled sparking a police search of the area.Inspector Troy Glasgow spotted the defendant in a silver car in the nearby Lorraine Drive area.In an attempt to stop Wilson, Insp Glasgow stood in the road. Instead of slowing down, Wilson accelerated.Insp Glasgow stepped to the side as the car passed and attempted to pull the keys from inside the vehicle, but his arm struck the window.The officer was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he subsequently underwent surgery to remove glass fragments and repair damaged tissue.Wilson, who has prior convictions for assault and threatening behaviour, was later arrested at his home.Defense attorney Shade Subair told the court that Wilson had been drinking heavily on the night in question and requested that the court order a report on the defendant.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter until January 11 so a report can be carried out, remanding Wilson into custody until then.
