Micah Franklin’s run in the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships came to an end at the hands of Christopher Binnie in the quarter-finals at the weekend.

The 21-year-old sailed through his first two games, but met his match when the draw pitted him against Binnie, the tournament favourite.

There was, however, no let-up from the Bermudian No 1, who went the distance with the top-rated Jamaican in a heroic effort.

The pair traded victories in the first four games, with Binnie winning the first and third 11-6 and 11-3 and Franklin answering by taking the second and fourth 11-7 and 11-5.

This set the stage for a decisive fifth game, which went to six-times champion Binnie 11-7 in a hard-fought affair.

“So close to dethroning the past champion but unfortunately just couldn’t take those last few points,” Franklin said. “Chris is a great player and I’m happy to come as close as I did, I’ll be looking forward to a second chance hopefully in the team event.”

Andrew Boyce beat Peter Pirtheesingh, of Trinidad and Tobago, 11-8, 11-7, 11-13, 11-7 before losing to Shawn Simpson, of Barbados, in the second round.

Chris Stout lost to Julian Jervis, of the Cayman Islands, in the first round 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 11-6. Andrew Stout beat Khamal Cumberbatch, of Barbados, in the first round 11-4, 11-3, 11-4, before losing to eventual finalist Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands in the second.

Anthony Fellowes, of Bermuda, won against Leon Truss, of Barbados, 11-9, 11-4, 11-4, but lost to Sunil Seth, of Guyana, in the second round.

In women’s action, Bermuda’s Denise Kyme put in an impressive showing, beating Ruth Deane-Webster, of Barbados, in a marathon match, 11-7, 11-7, 10-12, 10-12, 11-8.

She then lost to Brooke Burrowes, of Jamaica.

Bermuda’s Rachel Barnes lost in the first round to Nadia McCarthy of Barbados. The Barbadian won 11-4, 5-11, 11-9, 11-7. Susie Lacey, of Bermuda, lost her first match against Akeila Wiltshire of Guyana 11-3, 11-7, 11-4.
