Boyce slips at Worlds
Local skipper Trevor Boyce slipped down the leaderboard at the J-24 World Championships on Lake Ontario yesterday.The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (RHADC) sailor started the day 19th in the overall fleet but lost ground after posting finishes of 47 and 72, the latter result representing his worst score to date.Provisional results showed Boyce 28th among the 96-boat fleet.Yesterday saw the fleet compete in 10-16 knot breezes.The day before, Boyce and crew posted two top-ten (sixth and tenth) finishes, his best showing so far at the championships that will conclude following today’s final race of the ten-race series.The local skipper is joined onboard his US-based J-24, No Skirt Required, by crew Jorge Chiapparro (trimmer), Dr Robert Yearwood (tactician), Gary Taylor (mast), and Nicho (bow).Provisional results showed Mauricio Santa Cruz (Brazil) still holding a commanding lead over nearest rivals Mike Ingham (USA) and Nicolas Cubria (Argentina).After ten races are completed teams will be permitted to discard their worst finish that will not count towards their series total.This year’s J-24 World Championships are being hosted by New York-based Rochester Yacht Club and contested by teams from 12 different countries, including Argentina, Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Peru and hosts USA.
