RHADC skipper Trevor Boyce (left) posted two top ten finishes at the 2012 J -24 World Championships yesterday

Bermuda’s Trevor Boyce enjoyed some of his finest moments to date at the J-24 World Championships on Lake Ontario yesterday. The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (RHADC) skipper produced two impressive top ten displays to further consolidate his position in the top half of the fleet.Sailing in 10-18 knot breezes and seas ranging from two to six feet, Boyce posted finishes of sixth, tenth and 58th in the three races contested yesterday. After seven races provisional results showed Boyce 19th in the overall 96-boat fleet with three races remaining in the ten race series that concludes tomorrow. The local sailor got yesterday off to a flying start with an impressive sixth place finish in the first race - his best showing so far at the five-day regatta. He was as high as third heading into the final leg towards the upwind finish line but was overtaken by three boats that denied him of a deserved podium display.Boyce had another solid start in the second race which saw him reach the first windward mark in fourth before gradually falling off the lead pace and settling for tenth. However, the local skipper did not fare as well in the lighter breezes that plagued the third and final race of the day, finishing 58th, his worst showing to date.Commenting on his fellow member’s progress at the ongoing J -24 World Championships, RHADC commodore Allan Williams told The Royal Gazette: “To be in 19th place after seven races out of 96 competitors is really quite brilliant. I am just so pleased that he is doing as well as he is and hopefully he can continue to do as well going forward.”Williams added: “Trevor has sailed in the J- 24 for many, many years and last year he bought a J-105 which is a natural progression from the J-24 class and he hasn’t even really campaigned that fully because he’s still got his finger in the J-24 class.“This summer he’s been campaigning in the J-24. He’s been out practising in his local J -24 (New Wave) for this event for several months now and he has taken a complete local team with him and racing in his boat (No Skirt Required) that he keeps in the US.”Boyce is competing in this year’s J-24 World Championships along with crew Jorge Chiapparro (trimmer), Dr Robert Yearwood (tactician), Gary Taylor (mast), and Nicho (bow). There are 96 teams from 12 countries (Argentina, Barbados, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Peru and the United States) represented at this year’s J-24 World Championships that is being hosted by New York -based Rochester Yacht Club.Provisional results showed Mauricio Santa Cruz (Brazil), Mike Ingham (USA) and Frithjof Schade (Germany) occupying the top three spots at the ongoing regatta.
