New Yorkers take early Pro-Am lead

Smoot along with John Howell, Bob Templeton and Trevor Boyce lead both the net and gross divisions in the 54-hole tournament, after firing a net 128 to edge Woburn CC by two shots, and a gross 138, to put them five clear of Woburn and Sagamore GC.
Devlin, the veteran Australian who won eight times on the PGA Tour and has triumphed once on the Senior Tour -- at the 1995 FHP Healthcare Classic -- had to be content with a net 136 (eight shots off the pace) and gross 147 (nine shots adrift).
That left he and his team from the Desert Mountain GC in Scottsdale, Arizona with plenty of ground to make up in the 26-team field.
Another well-known name, former CBS broadcaster Ben Wright, also endured a mediocre first round, his team from the Champion Hills Club in North Carolina returning scores of 140 (net) and 153 (gross).
Today features the second round while amateurs will take a break tomorrow to make way for the Lobster Pot Charity Pro-Am which sees local amateurs team up with the overseas pros in teams of five.
Thursday witnesses the individual pro and amateur championships with the Pro-Am concluding on Friday.
