Tariqah shows men who's boss

Tariqah Walikraam and her plate.

Bermuda's Tariqah Walikraam outshone her male compatriots in the recent Canadian Junior Golf Association's (CJGA) PING Canadian Junior Match-Play Championship in Ontario, Canada.

The visitor turned back the challenge of seven hometown rivals to win the Girls' Open division at Horseshoe Valley Resort. Her victory was all the more impressive as the 14-year-old was the youngest female in the tournament and also led the qualifying round with scores of 85 and 90 - five shots ahead of No. 2 seed Christan Bosley.

Walikraam enjoyed a bye in the first round before winning her second-round encounter three and one over 17-year-old fourth seed Claudine Foong by sinking a 40-foot putt at the 17th hole. In the final, the Bermudian showed her mettle against Katie Van Vliet, coming back from being two down after seven holes. She drew level at 11 holes and finished the match on the 16th hole by taking an unassailable four-shot lead.

For her efforts, the young golfer, who was on her first trip to Canada, was invited to next week's National Championship at St. Andrew's Course in Ontario. She and five other Bermudians - Laura Robinson, Ebonie Burgess, Andrew Osborne, Andrew Boyce and Camiko Smith - will compete in that event.

Meanwhile, in the Boys' 17-18 Group of the PING tournament, Eric West and David Boyce both crashed out in the first round of match play while William Tucker did not make the cut. West had placed second in the qualifying round, scoring 72 and 75, and Boyce, fifth, with 79 and 74.

In the Boys' 14-16, Andrew Osborne made it to the second round before losing to David Albert. Osborne - with two rounds of 79 - qualified in seventh place and then defeated Justin Lesansky in the first round. Daniel Augustus failed to make the cut in this age group.
