Charity launches search for kind heart

After six years of searching, charity organiser Lucy Willets has located a Bosnian child who was promised artificial limbs by an Island resident.

A glitch in the diligent effort is that Ms Willets has forgotten the name of the potential benefactor who made the original offer.

The little baby's picture was taken by Royal Gazette photographer David Skinner during a visit to war-torn Bosnia in 1994. The little girl was recuperating in a bombed-out hospital in Mostar, having lost both her legs during a mortar attack on the town.

The photo captured the heart of a local resident after it was run in the RG magazine in 1994. The man had called Ms Willets offering to pay for the baby's artificial limbs.

But the displacement wars can cause made Ms Willets' search a long one. She revealed yesterday that she had finally located the child, now seven years old, who remains without artificial limbs.

Anyone who knows who wanted to make the generous donation or who may want to step in in his stead is asked to contact Ms Willets at 292-6185.
